Obituary for Doris Lea Combs

Doris Lea Combs, 95, of Bloomingrose, WV passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

Doris was born October 7, 1928 at Sharlow, WV to Roy and Opal (Seacrist) Cantley.

She was a member of the Lord’s Church, and worshipped with the Bloomingrose Church of Christ.

An avid lover of the outdoors, Doris loved being out in her beloved West Virginia hills. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, bird watching, and berry picking, especially with her favorite berry picking partner, Johnny Harless. She loved watching sports, and was a life long Mountaineer fan. She also enjoyed being a part of the Racine Senior Citizen Center, and held fondly the memories and dear friends she made there.

Doris was so thankful to be a part of such a loving, close family. Throughout her life she continued to have weekly family dinners, gatherings for every birthday and holiday, and an open door for every day in between.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Quince Hendricks; husband, James Combs; daughter, Kathy Combs; and brothers: Douglas Cantley, Lyle Cantley, and Larry Cantley.

She is survived by sister, Jean Griffith of Bloomingrose; brother, Gary (Cathy) Cantley of Glades Springs; sister, Gloria Dawn (David) Peters of Toney’s Branch; daughters: Sherry (Clay) Mollett of Drawdy, Kim (Roger) Hauldren of Bloomingrose, and Nancy Jarrell of Whitesville; son, Randy (Vanessa) Hendricks of Van; granddaughters (whom she helped raise), Ashley (Timothy) McCourt of Bloomingrose, and Hayley Parsons (Matt Griffy) of Moorseville, NC; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; and 1 great great great grandchild; and host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends whom she loved dearly.

In a final act of love and giving, Doris donated her body to the WVU School of Medicine. A celebration of life will be held at the Bloomingrose Church of Christ on Saturday, December 30, 2023 from 12-2pm with Darrell Adkins and Jim Henderson officiating. A memorial meal will be held at the Peytona Church of Christ immediately following the service at Bloomingrose. Leonard Johnson Funeral Home, Marmet is in charge of arrangements.
