Obituary for Irene Lawrence

Irene Lawrence of Hernshaw, W.Va., passed peacefully at home in the early morning of May 19 after a sustained period of illness. She was 85 years old.

A believer and follower of Christ Jesus, Irene spent her life as a wife, mother and grandmother devoted to her family and church. She spent years teaching young children about Jesus as a Sunday School teacher. Irene often cleaned her church’s sanctuary week after week to spare the church the expense of cleaning services. She enjoyed studying her Bible, Sunday dinners with family and occasional periods of work at the former Quarry Manor in Charleston, allowing her to spend time with residents lifting their spirits. Hers was a heart of service understanding that by serving others, she served Christ.

Irene is preceded in death by her son Timothy, along with her parents Reggie and Addie Webb; and siblings Venus Blair, Vencil Webb, Ann Kirk, Goldie Maynor, Harold Webb, Reggie Webb Jr., Kathleen Curry, and Bobby Webb.

She is survived by her husband Howard of 67 years, as well as her daughters Sandra (G.H., 2017) and Trina (Ralph); grandchildren TJ (Amanda), Ben (Jackie), Justin (Lindsey), and Cody (Chelsea); nine greatgrandchildren, Maci, Peyton, Colten, Allie, Conner, Kensington, Easton, Ramsey and Shelby; sister Pauline Farace; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place Monday, May 23 at 11 a.m., at Leonard Johnson Funeral Home in Marmet, followed by a funeral service at 12 noon. The Rev. Tim Martin will officiate, with burial taking place at Marmet Cemetery. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers in Irene’s name to HospiceCare West Virginia. The organization provided care to her and assisted the family in Irene’s final days.
