Wanda Harless Stepto, 85, of Marmet, died on October 5, 2018, at home.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, David L. Stepto; her parents, Charley O’Dell Harless and Virginia Adkins Harless; brother Charles Kenneth Harless, and sister Wilma McSurley.
Wanda, who was generally known by her childhood nickname of “Sweetie,” was born on November 23, 1932, and was a native of Ashford in Boone County. She was a loving and generous mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She attended Slaughter’s Creek Freewill Baptist church in Chelyan where she very much loved and appreciated her church family.
Sweetie enjoyed going on senior bus tours with her long-time friend Lemoyne Thomas. She loved tending her flower gardens and watching birds in her yard, especially the chicken who fed at her birdfeeders a few years ago.
Sweetie is survived by her son, David E. Stepto of Durham, NC, and daughters Rebecca Stepto of Charleston and Pamela Honaker of Monongahela, PA; grandchildren John Stepto of Franklinton, NC; Christina Stepto of Oxford, NC, and Timothy and Jessica Honaker of Monongahela, PA; brother Kermit Harless and sister Sue Sizemore, both of Nellis; sisters-in-law Stella Butts, Kathryn Cook and Emogene Simms, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Leonard Johnson Funeral Home in Marmet. The funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 8 at Leonard Johnson’s with Rev. Gary Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery in Ashford, where she will be buried next to her husband and near her parents, Harless-Barker grandparents and great-grandfather William Harless.
